In this seminar, Timothy W.I. Clark, MD, offers a comprehensive overview of uterine fibroids, their pathology, symptoms and management—with a focus on uterine fibroid embolization (UFE). Director of Interventional Radiology at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Dr. Clark defines the candidate for UFE, describes the protocol, analgesic component and mechanism of the procedure, and reviews transradial UFE, an advance that permits earlier post-procedural mobilization and fewer complications than traditional UFE. Finally, Dr. Clark considers the devices employed during UFE, including a radial hemostasis sheath developed at Penn Medicine, and the advantages of the hospital’s dedicated interventional radiology suite.
