Anil Vachani, MD, reviews the fundamentals of lung cancer screening for primary care providers, beginning with the meta-analyses and clinical trials that have brought us to the present guidelines for patients at risk. In doing so, Dr. Vachani discusses the guideline idiosyncrasies, the requirements and mechanisms for Medicare reimbursement for screening, and the challenges surrounding false positive findings for patients. In light of this, Dr. Vachani considers the challenge of limiting the harm to patients who turn out not to have cancer, and risk estimates and management for lung nodules.
