Precision Surgery: A New Era in Surgical Oncology

Chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at Penn Medicine John C Kucharczuk, MD, devotes this presentation for primary care providers to two essential messages: that advances in the fields of medical oncology and radiation therapy are now being introduced in surgical practice and that lung screening continues to be a critical step for patients at risk for lung cancer, particularly smokers. In reviewing recent surgical innovations in lung cancer at Penn Medicine, Dr Kucharczuk discusses the Center for Precision Surgery at the Abramson Cancer Center, the “glowing tumor” technology developed by colleague Sunil Singhal, MD, to enhance tumor resection and the introduction of genomic profiling and its result, a supplemental personalized diagnostics report for each lung cancer patient. Addressing the vital need for lung cancer screening in patients at risk, Dr Kucharczuk acknowledges the complexity of making cessation and stresses the importance of communication between primary care providers and their counterparts in surgery.
