At the 2016 meeting of the American Society of Hematology, Elizabeth Hexner, MD, examines benefits of alternative donors in stem cell transplanation. She discusses alternative donors as a critical source of donor pool expansion for patients with hematological malignancies who lack a suitable match for allogeneic stem cell transplantations. She illustrates her presentation with case studies, highlighting the value of alternative donors, the tradeoffs for both haploidentical and umbilical cord blood transplantation and outcomes from recent studies of both stem cell sources.
