Targeted Therapy of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Metastatic to Brain: Current Treatment Paradigms

Corey Langer, MD, reveals a new perspective on non small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) metastases in the brain. Citing the rising incidence of NSCLC brain metastases, Dr. Langer notes that improvement in the treatment of primary cancers, including better tumor control in locally advanced and systemic disease, has made the brain a sanctuary site for neoplasms. Reporting on the new paradigm for care, Dr. Langer describes the expansion of stereotactic surgery to multiple brain metastases, improvements in whole brain irradiation, targeted therapy, newer systemic chemotherapies and the immunotherapies. Also includes considerations of the sequelae associated with treatment (particularly neurocognitive function deficits) and an extended consideration of targeted therapy clinical studies.
