Thoracic surgeon Taine T.V. Pechet, MD, provides an overview of recent advances in thoracic surgery and rehabilitative care at Penn Medicine. Focusing first on the histology of lung cancers (>53% of lung cancers at Penn Medicine were adenocarcinomas in 2013; another 24% were squamous cell cancers), Dr. Pechet discusses observed survival for these cancers at Penn and elsewhere and the challenges inherent in the treatment of groundglass opacities. Other topics include robotic procedures for thymectomy and pancreaticoduodenectomy at Penn and enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) to reduce pain, nausea and postoperative ileus (POI).
